Article : Win-a-flight competition. The full Story!

19-Oct-2007 :
Ramona Portelli for Manicmalta.com
Some months ago Manicmalta held a crazy win-a-flight competition . Now that the rainy season has definitively tarnished our summer dreams all we can do is sigh in disbelief as we reminisce about this uplifting experience - Article by Ramona Portelli. Thanks to Clare Agius, Vodafone, Melita Gardens and The Malta School of Flying.

The plane and flight were kindly provided by the Malta School of Flying thanks to Captain Kenneth Caruana. If you're even remotely interested in anything to do with aviation then be sure to get in touch with this excellent school. Remember that even the longest journey starts with one small step. If there's avaition in your DNA then get in touch with The Malta School of Flying today at www.maltaflying.com !

Jun 2007 - Charity takes to the skies.
Sponsored by Vodafone

It was a bright sunny day, and we all were prepared and excited for this flight around the Maltese islands.

I met our guests at an agreed location in Luqa airport; competition winner Charity Ovbiagele, a Nigerian studying in Malta and TV personality Clare Agius. We were shortly greeted by Capt. Kenneth Caruana who drove us to the old Maltese airport with no hesitation.

We parked near Kenneth's personal hanger, which seemed more like a huge garage only that instead of the parked car you'd usually expect we found a parked Rockwell Commander N629CC plane :)

Malta flying. Clare Agius. Manicmalta competition

Clare, Kenneth & Charity our lucky winner

While the winged Baby inched its way out of the shelter and onto the runway Kenneth started explaining to us how he got to own this four-seater plane ... Cool Huh? But to be really spoilt for choice the school itself owns four more aircrafts! (They can be viewed on www.maltaflying.com)

Before setting off, we were kindly treated to a welcome drink .. an energy drink to be precise. As if we weren't already hyped up ENOUGH!!!

I SOoo wanted ... NEEDED... to steady my nerves that I instinctively lit a cigarette along with the drink, like I would normally do elsewhere, but had to quit immediately as it’s a BIG NO NO at the airport. So I had to suck out the daylights out of that poor energy drink instead :((

Our excitement increased with every passing second until it was almost 6pm and ready for take off. We got ourselves seated in the plane, fastened our seatbelts and adjusted our special head gear.

Kenneth turned on the plane’s engines, and exchanged some pretty cool pilot-talk with control tower. TAKE OFF was fast approaching and within a few minutes WOOooosh we were soaring up and further up into the evening summer sky. Its exhilarating to be able to peek down at the tiny Maltese islands in such a short time!

Talk about Faith, Hope and Charity! Here's the new flying trio Clare, Ramona & Charity ;)

Kenneth was giving us frequent briefings like that we were flying at an altitude of 1500 feet above the Maltese islands, with a speed of 220 km/h. The feeling of real flight is unique in its rough and crude form ... a FAR cry from the virtual flight experienced on passenger planes. What can I say ?? ... you're just there suspended in mid-air like a bird or some jurassic pterodactyl, and you immediately get addicted to the adrenaline, the rush of energy and excitment pulsating through your system... possibly one of the closest experiences to natural flight.

Passenger planes are like taking the ferry whereas a 4 seater plane is like doing the same trip with raft and paddle instead .. if you see what I mean!

Only this machine was flying fast and we were comfortably seated .. or more precisely sitting upright on the edge of our seat to absorb every second, every glimpse we could get, in complete detail.

Within minutes we were flying over Gozo, Comino, Filfla and again Malta. We could se several Maltese attractions such as Portomaso Tower, Gozo Harbour, and took several photos as we also exchanged excited small-talk up in the sky.

Kenneth was extremely pleasant and helpful to us and answered every question with clinical precision even the ludicrous ones! We knew we were in good hands but must have given the poor chap such a headache :))

Unfortunately time flew by just as quickly. Soon it was time to land back on the runway. The flight duration time was exactly 55 minutes. Everything was under control in Kenneth’s masterful hands.

My special compliments go to Captain Kenneth Caruana. I'm always amazed at how one pilot gets to keep an eye on such a huge array of knobs and gizmos. Its just like driving a car to them I guess ... and they actually say its safer. So there you go!

Charity summed it all up nicely:- “It was a five star experience, the flight was fabulous and I couldn’t be in a better company that of Ramona, Clare and Kenneth. They made me feel comfortable around them. Thanks a lot for this wonderful experience you guys. Thanks Manicmalta!”

I'm so excited I barely recall what Clare said or did except that she was as pleasant, tranquil and happy as ever and seemed to me to be lost in thought on cloud 9.. probably planning her next TV program down on planet earth!

And how did it all happen? Well Charity was the winner of a thrilling competition of Jenga at Melita Gardens in May 2007. Charity had to compete with her two best friends Carolina Wells & Martha Bartolo without whom we wouldn't have had such a great time ... in Clare's good company of course. Here are all the photos of this event.
