Article : Thea Garrett's Dream come through!

22-Feb-2010 :
Ramona Portelli for Manicmalta.com

RAMONA PORTELLI interviews young singer Thea Garrett – winner of the Malta Eurosong 2010 with the appropriately named song 'My Dream'. The interview took place at Caffe Bottega situated at The Marina Hotel, Tigne Seafront, Sliema. A Big thanks goes to The Marina Hotel owner, Mr Joe Abdilla for kindly hosting this interview and pampering us with drinks followed by mouth watering pasta and pizza.

'My Dream' is composed by Jason Cassar and written by Sunny Aquilina. Thea Garrett achieved her dream to represent Malta in the Eurovision Song Contest 2010, performing in the first semi-final to be held on 25 May 2010 in Oslo, Norway. A very successful and unexpected victory for Thea on taking part in the Malta Eurosong contest for the very first time!

Thanks to Munchies Bar Bugibba for hosting our interview.

Thea Garrett and Ramona Portelli

Ramona:

We know you are a young and talented singer ... but how young exactly ? And is there any trivia that we could share with our readers?

Thea Garrett: I am 17 years of age turning 18 in two weeks time. I've been in a relationship for the past eight months.  Amongst other things I enjoy cooking, dancing and singing of course! I'm from Tarxien and bubbly by nature.

At first Thea could not make it ... but at least we got our hands on a wax model of her! :)

OOPS ..OK OK...No offence meant Thea! We were just pulling your leg!

Ramona: What was your reaction to the announcement that you are this year’s winner?
Thea Garrett: Honestly I just COULD NOT believe what was I hearing. It was truly like a dream come true. Even days following the festival I had to watch the dvd recording of that night more than once to finally confirm that I was not dreaming!!

Ramona:

Is not having a driving license a nuisance in keeping up with your busy preparation agenda?

Thea Garrett: Thankfully I can rely on my parents and my boyfriend to get me around!

Ramona: How did your lifestyle differ from the one you were used to before your exhilarating experience at the Malta Eurosong festival?
Thea Garrett: Well, errands are taking much longer as people continuously stop me to congratulate me. Others help me out in the best way possible once they recognise me. In a way, I sort of became popular. [laughing]

Gerard James Borg and Philip Vella

Will this interview never end?! I'm dying to taste the Pasta and Pizza at Caffe Bottega!

Ramona: What does music mean to you?
Thea Garrett:

Undoubtedly it’s my way of life !!!

Ramona: Recently you performed with Italian singer Gigi D’Alessio and we are absolutely dying to learn more about that too!!!! Please tell us!
Thea Garrett: It all started with an online competition and I sent my recording.  I was told to go to Rome for the auditions.  They had to choose 18 singers from 50 and I was the lucky winner to sing with Gigi D’Alessio on the opening night of his World Tour in Rome.  I was invited again to sing in Milan with a difference.  Gigi D’Alessio accompanied me on the piano and I sang one of his favourite songs as a solo! [That's Great Thea!]

Ramona: Do you consider yourself lucky?
Thea Garrett:

Very lucky. I guess I deserve positive happenings in my life since my past was quite dull. Now I'm keeping my fingers crossed that things will never ever change back to the way it was before [smiling]

Ramona: Are you into fashion?
Thea Garrett: I wear what I like and it does not necessarily have to be fashionable.  I like baggy clothing and I prefer London fashion rather than local [sorry!]

Ramona: “In a fairy tale I’ll live it, Just like a new born star” ... these words are quoted from your song My Dream. How closer can THAT get to reality!?
Thea Garrett: Yeah, I am the new born star of Malta !!  My dream just came true!!!! [laughing]

Ramona: What is your message to all the Maltese people?
Thea Garrett: I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for believing in me and in my song. I encourage all those people who lack self-confidence to take up the challenges life offers. We have one life so let’s just do whatever we enjoy doing without hesitation!
