Animae Gospel Choir participates in a 4 day International Gospel Workshop

The first four days of November this year, will always be memorable ones for Animae Gospel Choir. The renowned local choir visited Assisi for the 10th edition of the Gospel Connection, an event which brings people together through the power of music. Peace, friendship, fraternity and the love for music are the foundation of this Gospel family; a family made up of more than three hundred people from all over Italy and Animae Gospel Choir from Malta, making them the very first foreigners to take part in this great event.

They were days packed with workshops of Gospel music and liturgical dance directed by a group of excellent singers and musicians from the United States and Britain - these being Pastor Keith Moncrief, Pastor Ronald Ixaac Hubbard, Rodney Hubbard, Clive Brown and Dereque Withurs. Accompanying these five professionals were other renowned musicians from the Italian scene including Michele Papadia, Marco Verniano, Luca Enrico Vitali and Andrea Bartoli.

During workshops, a great amount of Gospel songs were learned in order to be sung at the Gospel Connection Mass Choir Concert. The repertoire included all genres of Gospel music from traditional to contemporary and even some original pieces composed by the Gospel Connection tutors. Apart from the hard work during seminars, there were times of fun like the Gospel Party which took place on Friday 2 November 2012, during which, each choir had the opportunity to sing a piece from its repertoire to the rest of the congregation. Animae Gospel Choir performed He got the Whole World, which is a traditional American spiritual, and after receiving a standing ovation, they were cheered on to sing a second song.
The grand concert of the Gospel Connection Mass Choir took place at the Teatro Lyrick in Assisi on Saturday 3 November 2012. It was not an easy task to stage all the singers, musicians and instruments but thanks to the impeccable organisation of the Gospel Connection led by Alessandra Invernizzi, this concert was a success, a feast of voices and harmonies which got the audience to their feet clapping, singing and dancing around – definitely a scene well-deserved after all the hard work. The flash mob on Sunday morning was also sensational. All participants of the Gospel Connection danced to a modern piece of Gospel music at the square near the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli. Many onlookers were attracted by what was happening and gathered around clapping and following the rhythm of the crowd.

The actual Gospel Connection experience cannot be fully explained by putting it merely into words. One could write about three hundred people singing, giving praise, dancing, and eating together. Or else, one could also mention the various ways of interpreting Gospel, the numerous amazing voices, great talents and the incredible teachers who gave their utmost to make it happen, but this still does not give justice to what one feels when being part of it.

Before ending this wonderful experience, before everybody dispersed and returned home, Pastors Ron and Keith gave all the partakers a task – to take all that was received during the 10th edition of the Gospel Connection and pass it on and transmit it to others. This is what Animae Gospel Choir intends to do through its music.

Indeed, the choir will soon have the opportunity to share this positive vibe with the Maltese general public, by means of A Holy Night with Animae.

Two concerts in aid of the children at St. Joseph Home, Sta. Venera, happening on the 22nd and 23rd December at St. Theresa Sanctuary, Birkirkara and Good Shepherd Chapel, Victoria Gozo, respectively.
Animae Gospel Choir participation in Gospel Connection 2012 was supported by the Malta Arts Fund and by Entertainment.com.mt Ltd.
