Christopher Saliba

Christopher Saliba is back with an interesting collection of semi-abstract landscape paintings, on show at the “National Museum of Fine Arts”, Valletta. The exhibition, titled “Roots of an Island”, is open to the public till January 28, 2008. In these recent works, Saliba draws his inspiration from the beauty spots that characterise the Maltese Islands. The local sceneries are often his source of inspiration. Rather than the subject itself, Saliba is interested in capturing the atmosphere and sensations which particular places suggest. The interaction between the natural environment and man-made forms are visualised by the young Gozitan artist as unique, harmonious and surprising formations.

These landscapes, executed with mixed media on canvas, are rendered in terms of dreamlike, mysterious and almost surreal evocations. Saliba’s primary concern is definitely that of having colour as the dominant and forceful element, whereas textural qualities applied to his canvasses render a consistent tangible dimension in his quest for exploring space. His paintings illustrate scenes which are familiar and easily recognisable. Yet, these are conceived as an abstracted imagery that goes beyond the merely figurative depiction of natural elements. Like a genuine expressionist artist, Saliba substitutes the visual objective reality with his own image of it. His paintings reflect an urge to transform the environment by rendering it more intimate and personal.

The exhibition is gently supported by the Bank of Valletta and Charts Investment Management Service Limited. It is open to the public from Monday to Sunday from 9 a.m. till 5 p.m. (last admission at 4.30 p.m.). For more information one may refer to the artist's official website: www.gozo-art.com
