Medical Aspects of the Great Siege of Malta 1565

A historical talk will be delivered by Medical Historian and Author Professor C. Savona-Ventura. This will review the Medical Aspects of the 1565 Great Siege of Malta. Siege warfare during the Late Medieval and Early Modern World Periods was very much dependant on the health conditions prevalent in the opposing warring forces. The besieged and the besiegers were highly dependant on having good medical care not only to treat wounds sustained during battle but also good backup public health measures to ensure their general health, nutrition and wellbeing. The talk will be followed by a selection of Cold Cuts - Salami Milano, Salami di Napoli, Freshly cooked Tal-Ghadma Ham, Salami Calabrese, and various other salamis. Selection of cheeses such as Parmigiano, Fresh Mozzarella, Brie, Matured Irish Cheddar, Sweet Blue Cheese, Pecorino, Romano, Kelfatori. Selection of Fresh Fruit such as Grapes, Sliced pears, sliced Apples, Dried Figs. Selection of Dips served with Celery sticks, Carrot sticks and Bread Sticks. We will also serve our Historic Specialty of Grilled Sausage in a spicy sauce. The Recipe was obtained from an 18th century document. Drinks - Free flowing red and white wine, as well as water.
