Concert by the Argotti Ensemble at St Pauls

Nemanja Ljubinkovic and Maria Conrad Violin, Karl Mifsud Viola, Lucie Kucharova Cello and Jose Garcia Gutierrez French Horn.  The Melita Music, Culture and Heritage Foundation will be presenting an evening of chamber music on 26 May 2012 at 7pm, at St. Paul Anglican Pro-Cathedral situated in Independent Square, Valletta.

By simply attending this event, you shall help us to restore an ICONIC PART OF BRITAIN, MALTA AND EUROPE’S MUSICAL AND CULTURAL HERITAGE,  THE HISTORIC PIPE ORGAN  in St. Paul pro-Cathedral in Valletta, Malta.

This instrument possesses one of the earliest and most important examples of a 17th Century organ case by Father Bernard Smith, who was one of the most significant English organ builders of his time. It is one of the last of its period to have survived.

The Organ originates from Chester Cathedral and was shipped to Malta in 1854. There is a strong tradition that while in Chester, it was played by G.F. Handel when on his way to Dublin for the first public performance of The Messiah, hence the European dimension.

This concert will feature the Argotti Ensemble, an international group of highly accomplished musicians consisting of  Nemanja Ljubinkovic and Maria Conrad on the violin, Karl Mifsud on the viola, Lucie Kucharova on the cello and Jose Garcia Gutierrez on the french horn.

The programme will open with Beethoven String Quartet in Bb major, op.18 no.6, one of the later and more demanding string quartets. This will be followed by Mozart Horn Quintet in Eb major KV 407, a much-loved light-hearted work which features the ensemble this time with two violas played by Ljubinkovic and the addition of the horn. The evening will come to a close with another milestone string quartet, Dvorak American in F major op. 96.

Tickets for the concert are priced at 15 and 20 Euro and are available on line at, from Exotique Valletta, Sliema and Baystreet, Star Tourist in Qawra; selected MaltaPost Outlets Valletta, Sliema, Paola, San Gwann and Mosta and from EPC Computer Centre in Mellieha or at the door.
