Rotary Club Malta 4th Hands-On Day

Rotary Club Malta is holding its 4th Hands-On Day at Dar Qalb ta Gesu, a shelter for victims of domestic violence in Santa Venera on Saturday the 12th May where its volunteers will undertake a make-over of the home.

Dar Qalb ta Gesu houses families, women and children who fall victims of domestic violence and are struggling to overcome their negative experiences. The home, founded in 2001 is a joint venture between the Church and Government. Dar Qalb ta Ġesù is a second-stage shelter in that it accommodates families who, after an initial stay at first-stage shelters such as Dar Merhba Bik and Agenzija Appogg, are not yet ready to live independently. At the shelter, residents follow a therapeutic programme aimed to reinstate them in the local community through training in areas such as education, social skills and home management.

The Rotary Hands-On Day will serve as a major boast to improve the conditions of those living in the home with painting of walls and doors, clearing of the garden and various other maintenance jobs planned to be carried out by our volunteers.

As has happened with previous Hands-On Days, we are seeking to gather a number of volunteers to perform these jobs and sponsors to provide materials.

This will be the fourth Rotary Hands-On Day and follows the extremely successful events held at St Theresa Home, Siggiewi in May of last year, Dar Jeane Antide in April 2010 and at Dar il-Kaptan in October 2009 where 85 and 75 people respectively gave up their time on a Saturday rolling up their sleeves to update, makeover and maintain the property and gardens of the two institutions.

The objective of the Rotary Hands-On Days is to get Rotarians, families and friends to go up to the home for a fun day where we will spend energy, rather than money, making a difference. It is incredible what a difference we made last time.

Given the nature of the work required, we are aiming at 50 people split into groups covering gardening, painting of rooms and doors as well as general maintenance jobs. This will be an all-day fun event with food, drinks and music.

The event will be a great help to the home whose resources are very limited and are stretched to provide even basic services to their clients.

For those of you not able to attend, donations of money to cover some of our costs of materials will be greatly appreciated. Please address these to Rotary Club Malta and send them to 1 Don Rua Street, Sliema.

Rotary would like to thank our sponsors for the event GFI Charity Fund
