BirguFest 2012

BirguFest is once again being held this year between Friday 19th and Saturday 20th October 2012.  Since its launch seven years ago, thousands of people flock to this festival which has increasingly gained popularity amongst both locals and foreigners alike, raising to the level of a national event. The festival highlights the beauty and history of Citta Vittoriosa through a number of activities for people of all ages.

This year is no different and the festival will once again host locals and visitors alike, for
another edition of the candle lit magical evening, together with a variety of traditional music, choirs, local and foreign bands. For the young at heart, concerts by renowned local bands will rock the main square of Birgu on Friday and while on Saturday the people of all ages can relax to a concert of mixed music including jazz.

Every year BirguFest aims to focus on the city’s historic heritage and architectural beauty and over the years it has developed into a national event, where thousands of people will roam through the narrow and winding streets of this gem of a fortified City.  The historic re-enactments, discounted museum entrances, Churches and Auberges will once again contribute to one of the most memorable events in the cultural Maltese calendar.

However, the highlight of this event, the magical Birgu by Candlelight on Saturday, where all the streets and houses of this magnificent City will be lit only by thousands of candles, which will surely add a romantic touch to this city’s historical ambience, together with a variety of traditional music, choirs, local and foreign bands.

The festival, organised by the Birgu Local Council with the collaboration of the Parliamentary Secretariat for Consumers, Fair Competition, Local Councils and Public Dialogue, together with the Malta Tourism Authority and various other sponsors, aims to promote and generate interest in the historical heritage of Vittoriosa, the first home of the Knights of St. John in Malta, whilst providing entertainment which will suit all taste and ages.
