The Death of Snow White

A contemporary dance interpretation set to take place at Aurora Opera House on the 1st of December 2012 and at the Mediterranean Conference Centre on the 7th and 9th of December 2012.

Naupaca Dance Factory is a contemporary dance company based on the island of Gozo. It is made up of a group of individuals, coming from different artistic backgrounds, who strive to create and share ideas about bodily movement and artistic expression. Naupaca Dance Factory constantly seeks to explore dance as an interdisciplinary medium, and to present to audiences a sense of performance that is both limitless and visionary. Naupaca Dance Factory’s upcoming project, The Death of Snow White, was born out of this urge to question and reconsider local pre-established notions of artistic techniques and meanings. The Death of Snow White is a dance production that integrates different creative visions of individual artists in order to generate a retelling of the Brothers Grimm tale. Through this production, Naupaca Dance Factory hopes to share with audiences its methods of fusing together and bringing to life, in a powerfully visual manner, its different concepts and ideas about the language of dance and performance art.

Referring to the significance and meanings contained within myths and rites of initiation and death, Naupaca Dance Factory The Death of Snow White reaffirms the Brothers Grimm story as a tale of wonder, yet reconsiders the functional unity of the fairy tale, in order to reveal the darker vision of the human condition repressed within it. The Death of Snow White rereads the function and nature of dance itself, as it does not present the medium as a celebratory expression of bodily movement, but as a means through which the enthropic nature of the dead and the dying body could be explored, as it presents physical beings that are unable to escape and move beyond the liminal phases of existence.

The Death of Snow White is a fairy tale, and as with all fairy tales, it can only happen if rules are followed. The following can only be staged if these three conditions are respected.

Every scene is an exploration of death.
Every moving body is dying.
Time is malleable.

Marise Grech is Snow White.
Deborah Agius is The Queen.
Stepan Pechar is The Prince.
Yana Dimech is The Mirror.
Denise Buttigieg is Tempastas.
