Malta Neolithic Temples Seminar and Site Tour

A day seminar organised by Dr David Trump in collaboration with Flimkien ghal Ambjent Ahjar.

In keeping with its role to promote awareness of Malta history and heritage sites, Flimkien ghal Ambjent Ahjar will be holding a one-day seminar on Malta Neolithic Temple culture in collaboration with the renowned archaeologist Dr David Trump and several experts in the field who will present a wide-ranging view of temple building and life with discussion time between the presentations.

Dr David Trump will start by talking about the arrival of the first people from Sicily, their settling in Malta and their development into megalithic temple builders.  The next presentation will by photographer Daniel Cilia who will show the prehistoric sites and building that we have lost through a century of development. He will also show the Neolithic sites which are still intact at present.

Dr Reuben Grima will discuss the distribution of the Neolithic sites. The temple-builders did not choose their sites by chance - they used significant places in the landscape, which had long been exploited because of the advantageous environmental conditions that they offered.  Architect Professor Alex Torpiano will explain the engineering behind the construction of the Maltese temples and the ingenuity of the prehistoric builders in managing to find simple solutions to complicated building schemes using only the limited local materials and human resources.

Professor Frank Ventura will delve into possible connections between temple orientations and celestial phenomena. The solar and star alignments at the Mnajdra Temples will be visually explained in relationship to their context in the landscape and with the other Maltese Neolithic temples.

Professor Anthony Bonanno will talk about the rituals, religious and funerary customs of the neolithic temple builders, as revealed by the architecture of the Maltese temples and hypogea, and the ceremonial apparatus, like statues, altars, and other material found inside them. Ms Sharon Sultana will give us a glimpse of how the temple builders lived 5,000 years ago, an insight gleaned from the human and animal figurines, statues and representations found in abundance in the Neolithic sites.

Dr David Trump will end the seminar by discussing the various hypotheses of why the culture of the temple builders suddenly collapsed around 2,500 BC.

On Sunday 5 May 2013 FAA will be organising a day-long bus tour to Tarxien, Hagar Qim and Mnajdra Temples, the Misqa Tanks, followed by a meal and visit to the Limestone Heritage and an optional tour to the National Museum of Archaeology. While on the bus Dr Trump will be giving a commentary on the temples and will be present to answer questions at the temples.

This weekend is not to be missed by anyone who is interested in Malta past. A seminar, with so many distinguished speakers on the subject of Malta prehistory has not been held in Malta for many years. A number of persons have already booked from overseas and will be travelling to Malta purposely for this seminar and tour.
