What it is
The ClimbMT Deep Water Soloing boat trip is one of the most distinctive adventure days on Malta's summer calendar, and the 2026 edition sails on Sunday 5 July aboard the boat SEA STAR. It is a full day of climbing, swimming and relaxing along Malta's coastline, running from 10am to 4pm with boarding at 9.45am sharp. Deep water soloing is a form of rock climbing done above the sea without ropes, where the water below is your safety net - so every route comes with the option, and often the inevitability, of a cooling splash.
What makes it so appealing is that it is genuinely accessible. The organisers describe it as suitable for experienced climbers and for adventurous newcomers who simply want to try something different in a relaxed, social atmosphere. You travel by boat to climbing spots along the coast that you could not easily reach on foot, climb at your own level just above the sea, and swim, sunbathe or watch from the deck in between. It is part climbing trip, part boat party, and the social, low-pressure vibe is a big part of the draw.
The SEA STAR is well set up for the day, with a shade-covered seating area, an open front deck, a rooftop deck, a bathing platform, two climbing ladders, an outdoor freshwater shower, toilet facilities and a Bluetooth stereo. Pricing is EUR 30 for ClimbMT members and EUR 40 for non-members, with non-members asked to sign up to the booking system first. Places are strictly limited to 60 passengers and the trip typically sells out quickly, so early booking is strongly recommended - this is not something you can usually decide on the day.
For visitors, it is a brilliant way to experience Malta's coast from the water and to try an adventure sport in a safe, friendly setting. No special climbing experience is essential to enjoy the day, though a reasonable level of fitness and comfort in the sea helps. Bring swimwear, sun protection, water, a hat and a towel, and be ready for plenty of time in and around the water; climbing shoes can usually be arranged, but check when booking.
Because numbers are capped and the trip is popular, the key practical step is to book ahead through ClimbMT's official page, which is also where you confirm the meeting point, what to bring and the latest details, as weather can affect sea conditions. For travellers who want something active, sociable and unforgettable - and a view of Malta's cliffs and coves that most visitors never get - the Deep Water Soloing boat trip is a standout. Secure your place early via the organiser before it sells out.
