What it is
The Farsons Great Beer Festival is Malta's biggest and best-loved beer festival, and the 2026 edition runs over ten nights from 23 July to 1 August at the National Park in Ta' Qali, in the centre of the island. Best of all for a visitor, entrance is completely free - you simply turn up, and pay only for what you drink and eat once inside. The festival is run by Simonds Farsons Cisk, the local brewer behind Cisk lager and a long line of Maltese beers, so the bars pour a wide range of their beers and ciders alongside guest and international brands. A long-standing tradition is the souvenir festival mug, and bar purchases are handled on a festival payment card rather than cash at the taps, which keeps the queues moving. There is a car park on site, and the organiser confirms the festival is family-friendly, wheelchair accessible and even pet-friendly - unusually for a beer event, you can bring the dog. What makes it more than just a drinks night is the atmosphere. Across the festival grounds, multiple stages host live music every evening - Maltese bands, tribute acts and DJs - so the site turns into a sprawling open-air party that thousands of locals treat as a fixture of their summer. Food stalls cover everything from Maltese platters and grills to burgers, pizza and sweets, so it works just as well as a relaxed family dinner early in the evening as it does for a lively night out later on. For travellers, it is one of the easiest and most authentic summer nights to slot into a trip. Ta' Qali is a former airfield turned national park and events ground, also home to the crafts village and the national stadium, and it sits roughly in the middle of Malta, well connected by bus from Valletta, Sliema, St Julian's and the north. On festival nights extra transport is usually laid on, and because parking fills up, the bus or a taxi is often the simplest option, especially for the journey home after a few drinks - Malta has a low drink-drive limit and it is strictly enforced. A few practical tips. The festival is an evening-into-night event, opening in the early evening and running late, with the music building as the night goes on. July and early August nights in Malta are warm, so dress light, but the open ground can get breezy late on. It is busiest at weekends and over the August 1 finale. Bring some cash to top up your festival card if needed, pace yourself across the long bar list, and make use of the food stalls. As a free, central, genuinely local celebration of Maltese beer, music and summer nights out, the Farsons Great Beer Festival is one of the surest bets on the July calendar. Check the official festival site for the nightly music line-up and opening hours before you go.
