What it is

The feast of St George in Victoria (Rabat), the capital of Gozo, is one of the grandest and oldest village festas in the Maltese islands, celebrated in mid-July 2026 around the magnificent St George's Basilica at the centre of the old town. For a visitor it is a chance to witness the Maltese festa tradition at its most intense and spectacular - and on Gozo, where the rivalry between feasts runs especially deep.

A Maltese village festa is a multi-day celebration in honour of a parish's patron saint, and St George's is among the most storied. The streets around the basilica are hung with elaborate illuminations and banners, the facades draped in red and gold, and the church interior decorated with damask, silver and the gilded titular statue of St George the dragon-slayer. Days of festivities build through band marches by the village's klabb tal-banda (band clubs), open-air concerts in the square, and Malta's famous fireworks - both ground set-pieces and aerial shells that light up the Gozitan sky. The emotional high point is the solemn procession, when the statue of St George is carried shoulder-high through crowds of parishioners and visitors.

Victoria is unusual in having two great rival feasts - St George's in summer and Santa Marija (the Assumption) in mid-August - and the friendly competition between the two parishes, each with its own band club and supporters, gives the celebrations an extra charge of pride and pageantry. St George's, centred on the baroque basilica with its richly decorated interior, is a feast of real grandeur.

For travellers, it is an immersive, free, open-air experience and a perfect reason to base a few days in Gozo. Getting there means the ferry from Cirkewwa in northern Malta to Mgarr, then a short hop up to Victoria, which sits at the island's centre below the Citadel. Expect warm, crowded, late nights, loud fireworks and a genuine community atmosphere; bring water, comfortable shoes and patience for the crowds around the procession.

Exact dates and the detailed programme of marches, concerts, fireworks and the procession are set by the parish each year, so check the local feast programme or Visit Malta for the confirmed schedule before you travel. As a window into the heart of Gozitan tradition, the feast of St George is unforgettable.
