What it is
The Victoria International Arts Festival, known as VIAF, is Malta's longest-running festival of its kind, and the 2026 edition is its 29th, running for five uninterrupted weeks from 12 June to 13 July in Victoria, the capital of Gozo. Its defining feature for a visitor is simple and unusual: the concerts and cultural events are free of charge. It has been described as 'Gozo's miracle' and 'a quiet revolution', and it turns the small island's churches, courtyards and theatres into a nightly stage for classical music and the arts.
The programme leans towards classical and chamber music - orchestral concerts, piano and violin recitals, choral evenings, brass ensembles and the occasional dance or crossover night - performed by Maltese and international musicians. The opening orchestral concert is at Teatru Astra on 12 June, and across the weeks you will find performances at atmospheric venues such as the Aula Mgr G. Farrugia, St George's Basilica and the Bishop's Curia courtyard. Most concerts begin at 8pm, which suits a relaxed Gozo evening after the heat of the day.
For travellers, VIAF is a reason to give Gozo more than a day trip. The festival makes the most of Victoria's compact historic centre, so you can often pair a concert with an early-evening wander around the Citadel and dinner in one of the town's squares. Because it is free, it is also an easy, low-commitment way to hear high-quality live music in a setting most visitors never expect - a parish basilica or a curia courtyard rather than a concert hall.
Getting to Gozo means the ferry from Cirkewwa in the north of Malta to Mgarr, then a short bus or taxi ride up to Victoria; the fast passenger ferry from Valletta is another option. If you are staying in Malta rather than Gozo, aim for an early concert and check the last ferry times for the return, or build in an overnight stay to enjoy the festival without watching the clock.
Although entry is free, some concerts fill the available seating, so arriving a little early is wise for the bigger orchestral and choral nights. The festival's own programme lists every performance with its date, venue and start time, and it is the place to confirm the full five-week line-up, which is released and updated through the season. For anyone drawn to classical music, heritage settings and the slower rhythm of Gozo, VIAF is one of the most quietly rewarding cultural events on the Maltese summer calendar. Check the official programme for the latest schedule before you plan your evening.
